The Corpus Museum in Oegstgeest near Leiden in the Netherlands was opened in 2008 by Queen Beatrix. It is dedicated entirely to the human body and offers visitors a unique “journey through the human body” – quite literally.

Housed in a building that incorporates a 35-metre-tall seated human figure, the museum blends education, entertainment and interactivity to deliver a memorable experience designed to deepen public understanding of human biology and health.

The idea for the Corpus Museum was conceived by Dutch entrepreneur Henri Remmers. Driven by a desire to improve public awareness of health and the inner workings of the human body, Remmers envisioned a place where people of all ages could explore anatomy in a dynamic and engaging way. His concept gained momentum in the early 2000s, and with the help of medical experts, architects and experience designers, the museum was brought to life over five years of planning and construction.

Visitors to Corpus begin their journey by literally entering the giant seated figure through the knee [Ed: Odd, but I guess they needed to choose something]. From there, they are guided on a 55-minute multimedia tour, travelling upwards through organs such as the intestines, heart, lungs and brain. Along the way, high-tech displays, films, animatronics and soundscapes provide insights into how each system functions and how lifestyle choices affect our health. It’s a vivid, immersive approach that demystifies complex bodily processes — from how we digest food to how neurons transmit thoughts.

What sets Corpus apart from traditional science museums is its theatrical presentation and emotional impact. The goal is not just to inform, but to inspire awe, curiosity and a sense of personal responsibility toward one’s health. After completing the guided journey, visitors enter the “interactive zone” where a more traditional museum setup offers hands-on exhibits, quizzes, and information about nutrition, exercise and medical research.

Since its opening, Corpus has welcomed millions of visitors, including students, families and health professionals. The museum collaborates with universities, government agencies, and non-profits to promote public health awareness, making it a rare example of edutainment with real societal impact.

The 1966 film Fantastic Voyage is a science fiction classic that shares a surprising conceptual kinship with the Corpus Museum. Directed by Richard Fleischer and starring Raquel Welch and Stephen Boyd, the film follows a team of scientists who are miniaturised, along with their submarine, and injected into a human body to perform a delicate brain surgery from the inside. [Ed: As you do.] The journey takes them through the heart, lungs, inner ear and brain, encountering white blood cells, antibodies and other biological obstacles along the way.

Fantastic Voyage was groundbreaking for its time, featuring elaborate sets and visual effects. While the science was fictional, the film sparked public interest in biology and medicine, and it influenced generations of students, scientists and storytellers.

The Lockheed Lounge is an iconic piece of limited edition furniture created by Australian designer Marc Newson in 1988. To this day it retains its title as the world’s most expensive design object by a living designer, having sold at auction in 2015 for well over £2 million.

The Art Gallery of South Australia should be feeling pretty good about that. An early version of the lounge, named LC1, was displayed at Marc’s first exhibition at Sydney’s Roslyn Oxley Gallery in 1986, and was acquired by the gallery for A$3,000. It remains in their collection.

The Lockheed Lounge is known for its distinctive design that combines familiar yet retro industrial materials (riveted aluminium cladding) with a sleek, futuristic form and aesthetic. The name “Lockheed” is a nod to the US Lockheed aerospace corporation, and specifically the 1946 Lockheed L-049 Constellation, the first post-war civilian version of a military transport aircraft used during World War II.

Marc’s inspiration for the work was both aeronautical (he was a big fan of The Jetsons) and organic. Also, as a keen surfer growing up in Sydney he was exposed to the process involved in the foam shaping and fibreglass covering of surfboards. Indeed, that’s how Marc fashioned the prototypes for the Lockheed Lounge, by taking a coarse wire brush to a block of foam until he was happy with the shape, applying the fibreglass skin and then painstakingly covering it all with individually cut and filed squares of aluminium, welded and riveted in place.

The result is striking. It’s a sexy beast. There’s no denying it.

Marc, who studied jewellery design at Sydney College of the Arts, was a focused maker and problem solver from a young age, spending hours in his grandfather’s garage dismantling watches and radios, building bicycles and balsa planes. He learned how to make things, using a diverse mix of materials … and how to strike that shifting balance between form and function.

But he also learned something just as important. He came to understand at a deep level what it takes to make something cool [RR2:03]. His 40-year body of work shows us that he knows, at an intuitive level, what to add in, what to leave out, where to put the logo, and the precise shade of orange (or whatever colour) that something needs, to take it from good to great. Call it designer’s rock of eye [RR1:59].

The Lockheed Lounge was always going to be a breakthrough project for Marc, and it’s fortunate that it happened so early in his career. In 1989 the designer Philippe Starck [RR1:42] convinced developer Ian Schrager to acquire one for the lobby of the hip Paramount Hotel in New York; then it appeared in Madonna’s 1993 music video for “Rain” – creating huge awareness for the piece and cementing its status as a symbol of luxury and high art/design.

The chair is regarded as a masterpiece of late 20th-century design, symbolising a fusion of art, industrial design and craft. It was included in Vitra Design Museum’s “100 Masterpieces” in 1995, and Carnegie Art Museum’s exhibition on aluminium in 2000 … both highly validating.

Design critic Alice Rawsthorn called Newson “one of the most influential designers of his generation”. Fellow designer and friend Jony Ive, previously Chief Design Officer at Apple, described him in a 2012 New York Times Magazine piece as “fairly peerless now” – and the spark that lit the Marc Newson fire was arguably the Lockheed Lounge.

Many of the world’s quirkiest annual events began as local customs, religious observances or spontaneous acts of mischief. Over time they have evolved into beloved traditions, drawing visitors from far beyond the communities that first dreamed them up.

Air Guitar World Championships (Finland)
The world’s best imaginary guitarists gather in Oulu, Finland to perform rock solos on instruments that do not exist. The underlying philosophy is delightfully earnest: “If everyone played air guitar, nobody would be at war.”

Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling (England)
Contestants hurl themselves down a terrifyingly steep Gloucestershire hillside in pursuit of a wheel of Double Gloucester cheese. The cheese usually wins. Injuries are common, but so is enthusiasm. The tradition is thought to be centuries old.

El Colacho (Spain)
Also known as the “Baby-Jumping Festival”, this centuries-old event sees men dressed as devils leap over rows of infants lying on mattresses in the street. The ritual is said to cleanse babies of evil spirits and bad luck.

Kanamara Matsuri (かなまら祭, Japan)
“Festival of the Steel Phallus” is an annual fertility festival held each spring in Kawasaki, Japan. Celebrated at Kanayama Shrine, it is known for its striking phallic imagery symbolising fertility, protection and prosperity.

La Tomatina (Spain)
Every August, the town of Buñol erupts into the world’s largest food fight as participants hurl thousands of kilograms of overripe tomatoes at one another. What began as a spontaneous street brawl in 1945 has become a major international attraction.

Monkey Buffet Festival (Thailand)
Each year in Lopburi, locals prepare an extravagant feast for thousands of macaques. Mountains of fruit, vegetables and desserts are laid out as a thank you to the monkeys that attract tourists to the town.

Night of the Radishes (Mexico)
On 23 December each year, artisans in Oaxaca carve giant radishes into elaborate sculptures depicting scenes from history, folklore and everyday life. It is equal parts agricultural exhibition and art competition.

Wife-Carrying World Championship (Finland)
Held in the town of Sonkajärvi, competitors race through an obstacle course while carrying a partner. The preferred technique is the “Estonian carry” [Ed: Technique verified by REMO’s Estonian designer], in which the carrier’s partner hangs upside down with legs wrapped around the shoulders.

World Bog Snorkelling Championship (Wales)
Participants plunge into a trench cut through a peat bog and propel themselves through muddy water using only flippers and a snorkel. Conventional swimming strokes are forbidden. It is exactly as ridiculous as it sounds.

World Toe Wrestling Championships (England)
The World Toe Wrestling Championships is an annual novelty sporting festival held in Derbyshire, England. Participants interlock toes and attempt to pin an opponent’s foot to the ground, resembling arm wrestling for the feet – not to be confused with Thumb Wrestling [RR3:84].

The “nuclear football”, officially the “Presidential Emergency Satchel”, is a hefty black leather briefcase that follows the President of the United States everywhere, 24/7 – serving as a mobile command post for nuclear war and a hub in the strategic defence system of the United States.

Weighing in at around 20 kg, the football is carried by a military aide when the president is travelling. (Technically, the football is a modified silver aluminium briefcase made by Zero Halliburton, encased within a black leather exterior jacket, presumably designed for both reasons of protection and to make it a little less conspicuous.)

There are actually three nuclear footballs: two are allocated to the president and vice president, while the third is stored in the White House.

Its origin lies in panic and hard lessons. During the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, President John F. Kennedy realised that if he were away from the White House, he had no reliable, fast way to authorise a nuclear response. The solution was to put the essentials of nuclear command and control on the move with the president at all times. What’s actually in the football has never been fully disclosed, but enough is known to sketch the outline. It is not a button, and it does not contain launch codes in the way films suggest. Instead, the case holds secure communication equipment, a classified book of pre-planned military options (including nuclear strike scenarios), maps and procedures for how to respond to different levels of threat.

The president still needs to authenticate his identity using separate codes – carried on a small card nicknamed “the biscuit” – before any order can be acted upon. The football enables decisions; it doesn’t make them automatically lethal.

Over the decades, the football has accumulated a surprising number of human, almost slapstick stories. Lyndon B. Johnson famously liked to swim and would take aides – and the football – poolside. Jimmy Carter once sent his suit to the dry cleaners, accidentally leaving the card with his authentication codes in the pocket. It was briefly lost. The “biscuit” was removed from a severely wounded Ronald Reagan immediately after the 1981 assassination attempt when the George Washington University hospital emergency department trauma team cut into his clothing. It was later discovered lying unsecured in one of his shoes on the emergency department floor.

Culturally, the nuclear football has become shorthand for ultimate power and ultimate dread. Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove (1964) turned the idea of nuclear command into pitch-black comedy, even if it predated the football’s modern form. In television shows like The West Wing and 24, the briefcase appears as a visual cue: the stakes have just gone existential.

Cartoonists and satirists often depict it as glowing ominously – a way of communicating the uncomfortable truth that civilisation can hinge on a human decision. [Ed: And, at the time of writing, the identity of that current human makes this especially terrifying.]

Not to be outdone, the Russians have their own version of the nuclear football. Cheget (Russian: Чегет) is a “nuclear briefcase” that is made available to the Russian head of state, the Minister of Defence and the head of the General Staff.

Today is White Cane Day, a day on which we celebrate the achievements of people who are blind or have low vision and recognising the white cane as a vital tool of independence and mobility. (As an aside, the white cane originated in 1921 when Bristol photographer James Biggs painted his walking stick white to make himself visible to traffic.)

The other thing to celebrate today is Braille.

The history of braille begins in early 19th-century France. During the 1810s, Charles Barbier, a captain in Napoleon’s army, developed a communication system that was subsequently called “night writing”. It used raised dots and dashes that soldiers could feel and interpret silently in the dark, helping them avoid detection by enemies. However, the system was quite complex and hard to use efficiently.

In 1821, a young blind student named Louis Braille, studying at the Royal Institute for Blind Youth in Paris, encountered Barbier’s invention. Recognising its potential, Louis set out to simplify it. By 1824, when he was just 15 years old, he had created the first version of what we now know as braille. His system used six dots arranged in a 2 x 3 grid, with each combination representing a letter, number or symbol. It was compact and could be read quickly by touch, unlike Barbier’s bulkier patterns.

Despite its practicality, Braille’s system was not immediately accepted. Many educators at the time insisted that blind students should continue to read raised print letters, even though these were much harder and slower to decipher. It took several decades of persistence – especially by blind students and advocates — before braille was formally adopted. By the late 19th century, it was widely used in France and gradually spread around the world.

Braille didn’t stop evolving there. Louis Braille himself created a system for reading and writing music notation. Later, additional adaptations like the Nemeth Code for mathematics and science were developed in the mid-20th century. With the advent of computers, braille displays and braille printers (embossers) have helped integrate the tactile system into the digital world.

Today, braille is an international language of literacy, with customised versions for different national alphabets (133 languages and counting) and technical fields. It remains a vital tool for independence, education and communication among blind and visually impaired people – protected and promoted by accessibility laws across the globe.

Every year on 4 January, World Braille Day is observed internationally to commemorate the birth of Louis Braille and to recognise his efforts. Although the event is not considered a public holiday, it has been recognised by the United Nations as an official day of celebration since 2019.

In 1923 Japanese inventor Niichi Matoba obtained a patent for applying the principle of an oxidation reaction to produce heat by means of platinum catalysis. [Ed: You got that?] He devoted himself to research and experiments over many subsequent years to make his idea for a pocket warmer suitable for practical use.

When he finally succeeded in manufacturing a prototype, he named it Hakukin-kairo (Hakkin warmer), but branding the actual product as “Peacock”.

The Peacock pocket warmer burns lighter fluid without the presence of any flame. Once the unit is filled, you hold any heat source (match, cigarette lighter or electric cell) near a glass fibre substrate “wick” that has been coated with platinum. Once the necessary temperature has been achieved, the platinum begins to catalyse.

It feels like magic.

An oxidation reaction usually produces intense heat. But when such a reaction is caused by platinum catalysis, much lower temperatures can be obtained and the heat lasts longer. Properly filled, a Peacock pocket warmer can burn for 24 hours and it can be refilled as many times as you like.

Hakukin marketed the Peacock beyond the medical field into leisure- and sports-related industries, providing people on the go with a portable source of warmth. They have been used by golfers, lawn bowlers, hikers – indeed anyone who needs or likes to be outside in the cold, but with warm pockets! They’ve even accompanied Australian expeditions to the Himalayas.

Although there are now disposable pocket warmers that use different technologies, the original Peacock Pocket Warmer is making a comeback, as people become increasingly averse to disposability – and more environmentally conscious.

In 2010 the US Zippo lighter company introduced its own version of a catalytic hand warmer, but it is not as nice nor as functional as the Peacock. Watch the 2016 field test comparison video by Finnish YouTuber Helsinkipop.

Postscript
One memorable REMO gift order from 2003 was for 14 Peacock Pocket Warmers engraved with the date and the first name initials of the bride and groom, Sheridan and Scott, for a wedding ceremony that took place in a hot air balloon sailing over Uluru and Alice Springs. Sheridan reports that the operator of the balloon was initially very nervous, perhaps justifiably, by the prospect of that many people trying to light their pocket warmers while jammed within a flammable wicker basket.

In his 2015 TED Talk design journalist Roman Mars described Amsterdam’s city flag as being the most “badass” in the world because of its simplicity and popular appeal.

The flag was officially adopted in 1975 and the XXX that it features can be seen everywhere in Amsterdam: on the flags, on the coat of arms, on municipal buildings, on rubbish bins, on drain covers, on any manner of souvenir – and on the ubiquitous bollards designed to keep cars off the footpaths (Amsterdamertjes or Little Amsterdammers) … not to mention on the many Amsterdammers who have had that “XXX” tattooed into their skin, somewhere discreet – or sometimes indiscreet.

So, where does the XXX come from?

There are a number of theories, both historical and popular:

X: The crosses reference St Andrew, who was martyred in the 1st century CE and crucified on an X shaped cross. So called St Andrew’s Crosses have appeared on Amsterdam’s coat of arms since 1505.

X: The diagonal cross “saltires” represent the three disasters that beset ancient Amsterdam: floods generally, the Great Fire (1452) and the Black Death (1663–1669). The symbol is there to ward off future threats. But note … this theory has been debunked as the uses of St Andrew’s Crosses by noble families in the area predate the Black Death.

X: The crosses represent the three places where it was possible to cross the River Amstel, denoted by the black stripe background to the crosses on the flag.

X: They represent Amsterdam’s seXXX industry. Given the first thing tourists see when they disembark at Central Station is one sex shop after another, it’s no wonder that would be the presumption by visitors to the city.

X: They reference the coat of arms of the Persijn family, one of the oldest noble families in the region and owners of large tracts of land in the capital. The knight Jan Persijn was “Lord” of Amsterdam from 1280 to 1282. His family’s shield featured St Andrew’s Crosses.

X: Finally, Amsterdammer Ed van Gelderen (featured here with his XXX tattoo) reckons that the XXX references the three monks who blessed the River Amstel dam from which Amsterdam derived its name.

Got any theories to add?

Seinfeld was famously pitched as “a show about nothing”, yet few television series have had a greater influence on the way people speak, think and describe everyday life. First broadcast on NBC in 1989, the sitcom transformed minor social irritations, awkward encounters and urban anxieties into a shared cultural language. More than three decades later, its vocabulary, characters and observations remain instantly recognisable across generations.

Created by comedians Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David (later of Curb Your Enthusiasm fame), the series rejected the sentimental formulas that dominated earlier sitcoms. Its four central characters – Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer – were selfish, neurotic and endlessly preoccupied with tiny social problems: double-dipping a chip, regifting presents, splitting restaurant bills or answering awkward party invitations. These seemingly trivial dilemmas proved to be universally relatable.

One of the show’s greatest cultural achievements was giving names to behaviours people recognised but had never got around to labelling. Suddenly the world had “close talkers”, “low talkers” and “double-dippers”. The series popularised phrases including “yada yada yada”, “shrinkage”, “master of your domain” and “not that there’s anything wrong with that”. [Ed: IYKYK] Even those who’ve never watched the show often recognise these expressions.

“Soup Nazi”, describing an authoritarian gatekeeper, became so widely used that it entered mainstream political and media vocabulary, and there are competitions for the best “Elaine dancer” – complete with thumb gesturing and little kicks.

In many ways, Seinfeld anticipated internet meme culture before the internet existed. Almost everyone could identify a “George Costanza moment” – a self-inflicted disaster caused by insecurity, dishonesty or overthinking. Quotable lines spread socially long before GIFs, TikTok clips and reaction memes became commonplace.

The show’s dialogue became conversational shorthand. The series also turned observational comedy into a form of social anthropology. It examined the unwritten rules governing modern life: when to say hello, how long to wait before calling someone, whether it is acceptable to eat an éclair from a rubbish bin, situations where the use of an exclamation mark becomes mandatory [RR6:16] or how to behave while queuing [RR7:71]. Seinfeld’s genius lay in noticing behaviours so ordinary they had previously escaped examination.

Perhaps the clearest example of the show escaping fiction and entering reality is Festivus, the mock holiday introduced in a 1997 episode. Featuring an aluminium pole, the “Airing of Grievances” and “Feats of Strength”, Festivus began as a joke based on a writer’s eccentric family tradition. Today it is celebrated in homes, offices and bars around the world every 23 December: “Festivus for the Rest of Us.”

Why does Seinfeld still resonate? Well, mostly because of the quality of the writing and the performances, but also because of its focus and preoccupations. Social awkwardness never truly disappears. The dating apps, smartphones and social media of modern life have only created new versions of the same anxieties. Seinfeld endures because it captured something timeless: the comedy hidden within ordinary human behaviour.

“Uncle Sam” is a personification of the United States, typically depicted as an elderly white man with white hair and a goatee, wearing a white top hat with white stars on a blue band, a blue tail coat and red-and-white-striped trousers. [Ed: Hmm … so Yankee Doodle specific!] He has come to embody the nation’s authority, ideals and – at times – its contradictions.

The origins of the character are usually traced back to the early 19th century and a real person: Samuel Wilson, a meat packer from Troy, New York. During the War of 1812, Wilson supplied barrels of beef to the US Army. These barrels were stamped “U.S.” to indicate government property. According to popular lore, soldiers jokingly referred to the initials as standing for “Uncle Sam”, linking them to Wilson himself. The nickname stuck, and “Uncle Sam” gradually became shorthand for the federal government. Historians debate the exact truth of this story, as there exists a footnoted reference to Uncle Sam in the 1810 edition of Niles’ Weekly Register, and that was before Samuel Wilson had his government contract in place. Even so, it remains the most widely accepted origin tale.

By the mid-19th century, Uncle Sam had begun appearing in political cartoons, often alongside or in competition with other national symbols like Brother Jonathan or the female figure of Columbia. Over time, Uncle Sam eclipsed these earlier figures, evolving into the tall, stern-yet-paternal character described above.

The image most people recognise today emerged during World War I. In 1917, artist James Montgomery Flagg created the famous recruitment poster featuring Uncle Sam pointing directly at the viewer with the words “I Want YOU for U.S. Army”.

The poster, inspired partly by a British design featuring Lord Kitchener, became an icon of American propaganda and four million copies were printed between 1917 and 1918. The image was revived again during World War II and continues to be reproduced and parodied in modern culture.

Artists like Thomas Nast helped refine the image in the 19th century, while later depictions have shown Uncle Sam both reverently and critically. In some portrayals, he is a symbol of freedom and democracy; in others, he represents government overreach or militarism.

Uncle Sam has appeared across a wide spectrum of media – political cartoons, films, advertisements and satire, e.g. Australians of a certain age might remember the 1970s TV ad for Uncle Sam deodorant.

The character has also been woven into popular culture. He appears in songs, comic books and even as a figure of protest, where activists reinterpret his image to make political statements. His instantly recognisable look makes him a powerful visual shorthand for “America” itself.

In 1961, the US Congress formally recognised Samuel Wilson as the progenitor of Uncle Sam, cementing the connection between the folklore and the historical figure. To that end, in 1989, a Congressional joint resolution designated 13 September 1989 – the birthday of Samuel Wilson – as “Uncle Sam Day”.

An octopus (plural: octopuses, not octopi) is a soft-bodied, eight-limbed mollusc of the order Octopoda. The order consists of some 300 species and is grouped within the class Cephalopoda – along with squids, cuttlefish and nautiloids.

Some unique and interesting things that you might like to know about octopuses:

They have been around for a very long time.
The oldest known fossil of an octopus ancestor belongs to an animal that lived some 330 million years ago, long before the dinosaurs.

They have nine brains.
One central brain controls the nervous system, and each of their eight arms has its own mini-brain that can act semi-independently. This allows an arm to explore, grab and even taste without direct instruction from the central brain.

They have three hearts.
Two of the hearts work exclusively to move blood past the gills, where it releases carbon dioxide and gains oxygen. The third circulates that oxygen-rich blood to the organs and muscles, giving them energy.

Their blood is blue.
Instead of iron-based hemoglobin (like ours), octopuses use a copper-based molecule called hemocyanin to transport oxygen – an adaptation that works better in cold, low-oxygen environments.

They are master escape artists.
With no bones and a soft, compressible body, an octopus can squeeze through any hole larger than its beak (the only hard part of its body). Many have escaped aquariums through tiny gaps and even slithered down drains to freedom.

They can change appearance in an instant.
Specialised skin cells – chromatophores, iridophores and leucophores – allow them to shift colours and patterns for camouflage or communication. They can also mimic coral or rocks.

Some species can mimic other sea creatures perfectly.
The mimic octopus (Thaumoctopus mimicus) can impersonate up to 15 species, including lionfish, flatfish and sea snakes – choosing the disguise best suited to scare off predators in the moment.

Each arm has a mind (and personality) of its own.
Their arms can continue reacting and grasping even after being severed. Studies show individual arms sometimes behave differently – some more exploratory, others more cautious.

They’re solitary and short-lived.
Most octopuses live just one to two years. After mating, the male soon dies, and the female sacrifices herself guarding and tending to her eggs until they hatch.

They use tools.
The veined octopus (Amphioctopus marginatus) collects discarded coconut shells and assembles them later as portable shelters – one of the first recorded examples of tool use by an invertebrate.

They taste with their suckers.
Each sucker is packed with chemoreceptors that let them “taste” whatever they touch – handy for finding edible items while exploring crevices.

For some, they are erotic muses.
“Tentacle erotica” goes as far back as a sensual 1814 woodblock print, published in Katsushika Hokusai’s Kinoe no Komatsu collection of erotic books.

They can edit their own genetic code.
Unlike most animals, octopuses can modify RNA on the fly to adapt their nervous system to changes in temperature or environment – an extraordinary level of biological flexibility. Their genetic structure is so unusual, some scientists half-jokingly suggest they’re “evolution’s closest thing to an alien intelligence”.

Personal Postscript
We were inspired to research these fabulous creatures by a kinetic sculpture that Remo’s daughter Lola Giuffré (STUDIO LOLA) designed and crafted mimicking the movement of an octopus’s tentacles using a system of internal gears. The one minute video includes the making-of. More about Lola’s Octopus HERE.

The zipper story begins in 1851, when Elias Howe, the inventor of the sewing machine, patented an “Automatic, Continuous Clothing Closure”. However, he never pursued it commercially, so it didn’t catch on.

The real groundwork came from Whitcomb Judson, an American inventor who, in 1893, introduced a device called the “Clasp Locker” – essentially a hook-and-eye fastener designed for shoes. Judson exhibited it at the Chicago World’s Fair and even founded a company, which would later become Talon, Inc., a major player in the zipper industry. But his design was clunky and unreliable, earning little success.

The zipper’s breakthrough came thanks to Gideon Sundbäck, a Swedish-American electrical engineer working for Judson’s company. In 1913, Sundbäck improved the design, increasing the number of fastening elements – developing a more reliable, interlocking system. He patented the “Separable Fastener” in 1917 – considered the true birth of the modern zipper.

At first, zippers were used mainly for boots and tobacco pouches. It wasn’t until the 1930s that fashion designers and manufacturers embraced the zipper for clothing. The B. F. Goodrich Company played a major role in popularising the term “zipper”, a word that they used to market a new line of rubber boots. They liked the “zip” sound it made. The name stuck. By the mid-20th century, zippers were everywhere: pants, skirts, jackets, luggage, military uniforms, and even astronaut suits. They offered a faster, cleaner and more secure alternative to buttons and hooks, helping to modernise fashion and functionality.

Today’s zippers are made by a variety of companies from metal, nylon or molded plastic, and they come in an astonishing variety of shapes and purposes – from heavy-duty waterproof zippers used in diving gear to tiny concealed ones in formalwear. Despite being such a simple mechanism, the zipper remains a marvel of everyday engineering.

Finally, an organisational case study: Consistent quality is a must for reputable fashion brands. For decades now, apparel makers who can’t afford to gamble on cut-rate fasteners have overwhelmingly turned to a single manufacturer. YKK, the Japanese zipper behemoth, founded by Tadao Yoshida in Tokyo in 1934 makes roughly half of all the zippers on earth – more than 7 billion zippers each year. Those three capital letters, standing for Yoshida Kogyo Kabushikikaisha, are ubiquitous. YKK has uniquely brought every stage of the zipper making process in house. It smelts its own brass, concocts its own polyester, spins and twists its own thread, weaves and colour-dyes cloth for its zipper tapes, forges and moulds its scooped zipper teeth. YKK even makes the boxes it ships its zippers in. And of course it still manufactures its own zipper-making machines – which it carefully hides from the eyes of competitors. With every tiny detail handled under YKK’s roof, outside variables get eliminated and the company can assure consistent quality and speed of production.

Postscript
Zipper mishaps are a comedy staple – perhaps most memorably in the film There’s Something About Mary (1998), where Ben Stiller’s character has a painful encounter with his fly while dressing for his prom. The scene is infamous and still makes people wince. Watch it if you’re game.

The word katana is a compound of kata (“one side, one-sided”) + na (“blade”).

The origins of the katana can be traced back to the 8th century, when Japanese swordsmiths transitioned from making straight blades to creating curved blades to facilitate more effective slashing techniques, particularly for mounted warriors.

During the Heian and Kamakura periods (794–1333), forging techniques advanced significantly, leading to the development of the tachi, a predecessor to the katana. These curved blades, worn edge down, were favoured by the rising samurai class, who regarded swords not only as practical weapons but as symbols of their elevated status. By the Muromachi period (1336–1573), the katana evolved into its distinct form, worn edge up for quicker drawing in combat. It was also during this time that kenjutsu, or the art of swordsmanship, became a refined discipline, emphasising both technique and philosophy.

During the Edo period (1603–1868), prolonged peace under Tokugawa rule reduced the need for swords in battle. The katana instead became a profound symbol of the samurai’s identity and their adherence to the bushidō code of honour and discipline. This era also saw the pinnacle of artistic craftsmanship in sword-making, with artisans creating blades that balanced functionality with exceptional beauty.

The katana is far more than a weapon, it is a symbol of the samurai’s soul, embodying values of honour, loyalty and discipline. It also showcases the artistry of Japanese craftsmanship, with each sword involving the collaboration of multiple experts, including bladesmiths, polishers and scabbard makers. Techniques such as folding steel (often dozens of times) to strengthen the blade and create intricate patterns (hada) highlight the fusion of utility and artistry. The making of a katana using traditional methodology is a fascinating process. Check it out online HERE or below.

In the modern era, katana making continues to be a revered art, with skilled craftsmen preserving ancient traditions. Authentic Japanese swords are highly valued by crazily passionate collectors and martial arts practitioners worldwide, while the katana’s legacy influences pop culture as a symbol of discipline, honour and exceptional skill.

Finally, a so-called “Hattori Hanzō sword” is a katana associated with a famous samurai and ninja of Japan’s Sengoku period (late 16th century). It’s also the name given to the comically lethal sword that the Uma Thurman character used to kill Bill in the Quentin Tarantino film of the same name.

Rosie the Riveter is an iconic cultural symbol that has come to represent the millions of women who entered the workforce during World War II to support the allied war effort by taking on jobs traditionally held by men. Since its rediscovery in the early 1980s, it has also become a more general symbol of women’s empowerment, to the point where today it has become a favourite Halloween costume for young feminists.

The image of Rosie the Riveter became widely recognised thanks to a poster created by artist J. Howard Miller in 1942. The poster features a strong and determined-looking woman wearing a blue jumpsuit and a red polka-dot bandana, flexing her bicep and proclaiming: “We Can Do It!”

Miller worked for Westinghouse as a war production coordinating committee artist. He actually created a series of posters that would help in the war effort by inspiring and boosting morale among workers during the war. They were to be displayed in the break rooms of the Westinghouse factories, each for two weeks at a time. “We Can Do It” was one of these posters and after its “term” was up (“FEB. 15 to FEB. 28”, as decreed at the bottom of the poster) it was taken down, its purpose having been served. So, contrary to popular belief, the “we” was actually a reference to the entire Westinghouse workforce, not just the women.

It turns out the woman in Miller’s poster was inspired by a photo of Naomi Parker Fraley, taken in 1942, while she was working at Alameda Air Force Base in California. The photo was in black and white, but she is indeed wearing a polka-dot bandana, which the artist made red and white in the poster. Fraley didn’t discover that she was the inspiration for Rosie until she visited the “Rosie the Riveter World War II Home Front National Historical Park” in 2011 as an 88 year old.

And Rosie herself was not named by the artist. The term “Rosie the Riveter” was popularised by a song of the same name written in 1942 by Redd Evans and John Jacob Loeb. That song celebrated the women who worked in defence industries during the war, which may partly explain why the original poster’s raison d’être has been feminised.

Despite its actual history, Rosie the Riveter has become an iconic symbol promoting gender equality, and the legacy of Rosie the Riveter continues to inspire discussions about women’s roles in society, workplace equality and the recognition of women’s contributions in historically male-dominated fields.

Variations of “Rosie” have also appeared as a kind of visual shorthand on lots of magazine covers, e.g. TIME, The Economist, Business Week and The New Yorker.

Rosie was well represented at the Women’s March in Washington DC in 2017. Artist Abigail Gray Swartz, who marched in her state capital of Augusta, Maine, was inspired by the spirit of the day to paint “Rosie the Riveter” wearing a knitted pink pussyhat [RR2:57] for the cover of the subsequent New Yorker. Clash of the icons!

In 2017, the United States Congress passed a resolution to mark 21 March as National Rosie the Riveter Day.

Primatologist Signe Preuschoft traces the smile back over 30 million years of evolution to a “fear grin” stemming from monkeys and apes, who often used barely clenched teeth to portray to predators that they were harmless or to signal submission to more dominant group members.

Human smiling likely evolved from similar appeasement gestures, gradually expanding to signal cooperation and trustworthiness. In social species, reducing aggression is essential. A smile can say “I come in peace” – without words. Over time, this signal broadened to include friendliness and bonding.

A genuine smile – known as a Duchenne smile, named after 19th-century neurologist Guillaume Duchenne – involves two key muscle groups: the zygomatic major (which pulls the corners of the mouth upward) and the orbicularis oculi (which crinkles the outer corners of the eyes). That eye involvement, which is very hard to control voluntarily, is what makes a smile look “real”.

Fake smiles typically activate only the mouth. Hilariously, this fake smile is also sometimes referred to as the “Pan Am smile”, named after the now-defunct airline Pan American World Airways, whose flight attendants would flash each and every passenger the same perfunctory smile.

A more recent nick name is the “Botox smile”. Chronic use of Botox injections to deal with eye wrinkles can result in paralysis of the small muscles around the eyes, preventing the appearance of a Duchenne smile.

Smiling is wired into the brain’s emotional circuitry. The limbic system, especially the amygdala and basal ganglia, helps generate spontaneous smiles, while the motor cortex can produce voluntary ones. This dual control system explains why some smiles burst out uncontrollably, while others are socially deployed by the individual according to the situation.

Neurochemically, smiling can trigger the release of dopamine, endorphins and serotonin – feel-good neurotransmitters associated with pleasure, stress reduction and mood regulation. Even forcing a smile can sometimes create a feedback loop: facial muscles send signals back to the brain that nudge emotions in a more positive direction. Moreover, studies show people who smile are perceived as more approachable, competent, and likeable – traits that carry clear evolutionary advantages.

Smiling is also linked to lower heart rate during stress and may contribute to longer life expectancy, though causation is tricky to prove. Still, the combination of stress buffering, social bonding and positive emotional feedback makes smiling a low-effort, high-return behaviour.

And smiling, not unlike yawning [RR3:90] and laughing [RR6:43], is deeply contagious. Seeing a smile activates mirror neurons in the observer’s brain, subtly encouraging them to mimic the expression and, in turn, feel a bit of the associated emotion. This is emotional synchrony in action – one reason shared laughter and smiling strengthen group cohesion.

But smiling isn’t always about happiness. People smile when they’re embarrassed, anxious or grieving – a psychological mechanism that helps smooth social tension. In difficult moments, a small smile can signal resilience or reassurance, i.e. I’m OK [RR7:63], and you don’t need to worry.

The most interesting units of measurement involve mixing precise scientific formality with absurd references, cultural in-jokes or impractical scales. Our selection:

Beard-second
Playful unit of length. How much the average beard grows per second: ~ 5 nanometres

Bee’s Dick
Australian term for a very short distance. [Ed: Not so short, protests the bee.]

Canard
A unit of quackery created by blogger Andy Lewis in the need for a fractional index measuring pseudoscience. The scale is from 0 to 10, with 0 being “no quackery” and 10 being “complete quackery”.

Donkey power
This facetious engineering unit is defined as 250 watts – about a third of a horsepower.

This one is real. Measures the height of horses. One hand is equivalent to approximately 10 cm (4 inches).

Hawking Index
Invented by mathematician Jordan Ellenberg, the Hawking Index (HI) is the percentage of a book’s readers who will finish it. Books with a lower HI are less likely to be completed. It is named after Stephen Hawking, whose 1988 book A Brief History of Time scored only 6.6% on the scale.

Jiffy
Gilbert Newton Lewis (1875–1946) proposed in 1926 a unit of time called the “jiffy”, which was equal to the time it takes light to travel one centimetre in a vacuum: ~ 33.3564 picoseconds.

Minutes per Big Mac
Minutes per Big Mac refers to how many minutes one has to work in a country or region at minimum wage to afford one McDonalds Big Mac in that country or region.

Moment
A measurement of time used in medieval Europe: 1/40 of an hour = 1.5 minutes

New York second
The New York second is defined in Terry Pratchett’s novel Lords and Ladies (1992) as the period of time between the traffic lights turning green and the cab behind one honking.

Poronkusema
A unit of distance used in Finland to measure how far reindeer can walk before having to urinate: ~ 7.5–9.6 km. See also: Untranslatable Finnish Words [RR5:84]

A Reuleaux triangle is a shape formed from an equilateral triangle by drawing arcs with a radius equal to the length of each side, centred at the opposite vertices. This creates a rounded, curved triangle with three identical curved edges. The shape may be familiar to you as the centre of a three-circle Venn diagram [RR4:81].

Despite its name, it’s not a true triangle. The most interesting property of the Reuleaux triangle is that it has a constant width, meaning that the distance between any two parallel lines that touch its boundary is the same, regardless of orientation. This is a rare trait shared only by circles and other specialised shapes.

And they exist in 3D form as well. The intersection of three spheres forms what’s called a Reuleaux tetrahedron. Sandwich some of these shapes between two flat surfaces and you can slide the top surface back and forward smoothly. It’s odd to watch things that aren’t balls, functioning like balls.

The shape is named after Franz Reuleaux, a 19th-century German engineer who pioneered the study of machines for translating one type of motion into another, and who used Reuleaux triangles in his designs.

These shapes were known before his time, however, for instance by the designers of Gothic church windows, and by Leonardo da Vinci, who used it for a map projection.

Other applications of the Reuleaux triangle include influencing the shape of guitar picks, fire hydrant nuts that can only be opened by firefighters who have the special wrench, coins used in vending machines that require the equal width to recognise the denomination, and specialised drill bits for drilling square holes – as well as in graphic design as the shape of some signs and corporate logos.

And because its width is constant, a manhole cover shaped like a Reuleaux triangle cannot fall down through the hole. [Ed: So circle, what we’re trying to say is that you’re not so special after all.]

Finally, the Wankel engine is a type of internal combustion engine using an eccentric rotary design to convert pressure into rotating motion. The Wankel engine’s rotor, which creates the turning motion, is similar in shape to a Reuleaux triangle, but the sides have less curvature.

The Beaufort Wind Scale is a system for estimating wind speeds based on observable effects on the environment, such as the movement of trees, water surfaces and the behaviour of smoke. It is named after Sir Francis Beaufort (1774–1857), an Irish Royal Navy officer, hydrographer and admiral, who developed the scale in 1805 while serving as captain of HMS Woolwich.

Beaufort initially devised the scale to standardise the reporting of wind observations by sailors. His original scale ranged from 0 to 12, with each level corresponding to observable conditions at sea and their corresponding wind speeds. Beaufort based his scale on the amount of sail a fully rigged frigate could carry in various wind conditions.

The pictures tell the story. Set out below are 0 to 12.

Having said that, most of us live on the land and not the sea. So some land-based indicators of wind scale are recited in the linked video, e.g. a Force 6 “strong breeze” will turn an umbrella inside out and Force 8 “gale force winds” will break twigs and small branches off trees and cars begin to veer on the road.

The scale was officially adopted by the Royal Navy in 1838 for use on British ships. This adoption helped in standardising the reporting of wind observations across the fleet, aiding navigation and communication.

Over time, the Beaufort Wind Scale gained international recognition and was adopted by other maritime nations. It became a widely accepted standard for estimating wind speeds based on observed conditions.

Despite advances in technology and the availability of more precise wind measurement tools, the Beaufort Wind Scale remains relevant and widely used, especially in maritime contexts. It provides a simple and intuitive way to estimate wind speeds based on visual observations, valuable in situations where precise wind measurements are not available.

Postscript
Hurricane warnings are issued when winds reach 12 on the Beaufort scale. But actual hurricane categories are determined by different factors. A 12 on the Beaufort scale is a Category 1 (lowest level) hurricane, but a 13 on the Beaufort scale is not a Category 2; it’s actually much, much stronger.

A snow globe is a transparent sphere, traditionally made of glass, enclosing a miniaturised scene, object or figure(s). The sphere also encloses a mix of water, eythlene glycol (antifreeze) and glycerol, serving as the medium through which the “snow” falls. The globe is shaken to churn up the white particles. The globe is then placed back in its position and the flakes fall down slowly through the liquid.

The origin of the snow globe is usually traced back to late 19th-century Europe where craftsmen experimenting with glass paperweights and lighting effects stumbled upon the enchanting visual of particles drifting in liquid. The US commissioner’s report of the 1878 Exposition Universelle in Paris included a reference to:

“Paper weights of hollow balls filled with water, containing a man with an umbrella. These balls also contain a white powder which, when the paper weight is turned upside down, falls in imitation of a snow storm.”

Then in 1900 an Austrian medical instrument maker, Erwin Perzy, was attempting to improve the brightness of surgical lamps. When he added semolina flakes to water in a glass sphere, he noticed they fell slowly and resembled snowfall. Recognising the poetic appeal of this happy accident [RR5:34], he shifted his focus from medical equipment to the development of miniature winter scenes and the Schneekugel (“snow globe”). Responding to the great demand for his snow globes, Perzy and his brother Ludwig opened a shop in Vienna. The first snow globe they sold held a tiny tin sculpture of the basilica in Mariazell, Austria.

The snow globe quickly evolved into a quintessential souvenir [RR5:69]. Its appeal lay in its ability to compress a place into a portable, self-contained moment. Unlike postcards or photographs, snow globes offered motion and atmosphere. By the early 20th century, they were being produced commercially across Europe and later in the United States, often depicting landmarks, religious scenes or seasonal imagery. After World War II, improvements in plastics and mass production techniques made them cheaper and more durable, accelerating their spread through tourist economies worldwide. Snow globes are souvenirs not just of geography, but of experience: a holiday, a honeymoon, a fleeting moment of wonder.

Over time, snow globes have also taken on symbolic and artistic meanings. In literature and film, they often represent nostalgia, illusion or containment.

Orson Welles’s seminal film Citizen Kane (1941) famously opens with Charles Foster Kane whispering one of the most famous lines in film history – just the one word “Rosebud” – followed by the image of a snow globe slipping from his hand, falling to the floor and shattering.

Contemporary artists have likewise used snow globes to comment on consumer culture, climate change and the commodification of place. Today, despite (or perhaps because of) the digital age, snow globes endure. In a world of infinite images, they offer something tactile, finite and oddly calming.

Production at the Perzy family’s Original Snow Globe Factory continues to this day, and they export high quality snow globes throughout the world.

Watch the BBC News interview with Erwin Perzy III below or HERE.

Postscript
In the 1980s the Original Snow Globe Company created a replica of the Citizen Kane snow globe containing a brown, snow-covered cabin and golden light shining through the window. A Warner Brothers executive approached Erwin Perzy II proposing a substantial order, but asking if the snow globe might be remade in black and white. His reason given: “Nobody has ever seen this snow globe in colour because it’s a black and white movie.”

Greek is one of the world’s oldest continuously spoken and written languages. Over more than three millennia, it has given rise to words that do far more than name things. They express values, emotions, relationships and ways of seeing the world. Many Greek words resist direct translation into English because they carry layers of cultural meaning accumulated over centuries. This collection presents 20 such words.

Agape (άγάπη)
Selfless, unconditional love given freely without expectation of reward. Also a name given to someone close to one’s heart, a partner or a child.

Aletheia (άλήθεια)
Truth revealed through uncovering or unveiling; not merely factual correctness but the disclosure of what was previously hidden.

Eudaimonia (ευδαιμονία)
A state of human flourishing and fulfilment achieved by living virtuously and realising one’s potential. Joy and happiness not from one moment in life, but life as a whole.

Filoxenia / Philoxenia (φιλοξενία)
Literally “love of strangers”; a deeply rooted tradition of hospitality and generosity toward guests and outsiders.

Filótimo / Philótimo (φιλότιμο)
A uniquely Greek concept combining honour, dignity, generosity, duty, pride and integrity – an incorruptible respect towards a fellow man/ woman, whether they be stranger or friend.

Hara (χαρά)
A profound and enduring joy that goes beyond temporary happiness or pleasure.

Kairos (καιρός)
The opportune or perfect moment to act; qualitative time rather than chronological time. Also a term used for weather.

Kefi (κέφι)
An exuberant state of joy, enthusiasm and high spirits that often expresses itself through music, dancing or celebration. Go Zorba!

Kosmos (κόσμος)
Simultaneously meaning the world, the universe and an ordered, harmonious arrangement. Also a reference to the human race as a whole.

Meraki (μεράκι)
Doing something wholeheartedly with soul, creativity and love – thereby leaving a piece of yourself in the work.

Metanoia (μετάνοια)
A profound change of heart, mind or perspective that transforms how one sees the world.

Nostos (νόστος)
The deep longing for home and the return to one’s origins after a long, difficult and eventful journey; the theme at the heart of Homer’s Odyssey.

NB: For Christopher Nolan’s recent film The Odyssey, the entire narrative is structured around return. Odysseus has spent roughly 20 years away from Ithaca — 10 years fighting at Troy and another 10 trying to get home. Home is the destination, but also the emotional objective.

Parea (παρέα)
A circle of friends whose bond is based on genuine companionship, conversation and shared experiences – your close group of friends and family coming together.

Philia (φιλία)
The affection and loyalty found in deep friendship; one of the classical Greek forms of love.

Ponos (πόνος)
Pain, hardship or suffering, particularly when endured with dignity and meaning.

Sophrosyne (σωφροσύνη)
The ideal of moderation, self-control, balance and sound judgment.

Thalassophilia (θαλασσοφιλία)
A love of the sea and a deep emotional attraction to oceans, coasts and maritime life.

Xenitia (ξενιτιά)
The emotional condition of living far from one’s homeland – often accompanied by homesickness and longing. A type of exile away from deep cultural and spiritual roots and the centuries of history.

Xenodochia (ξενοδοχία)
A spirit of welcoming and caring for travellers and guests, extending beyond simple hospitality. It’s the word Greeks used for their hotels in plural, and Xenodochio in singular.

Zōē (ζωή)
Life in its fullest sense – not merely existence, but vitality, energy and the experience of being alive.

Fingerprints have a significant presence in popular culture, particularly in detective and crime-related stories. They are widely recognised as a form of unique identification and play a crucial role in solving mysteries and identifying criminals.

So, what are they actually?

Fingerprints are the impressions made by the unique patterns of ridges and valleys found on the tips of (predominantly human) fingers. These intricate designs – loops, whorls and arches – are formed before birth and remain unchanged throughout a person’s life, making them one of nature’s most reliable identifiers.

The formation of these patterns begins in the womb, typically around the 10th week of gestation. As the fetus grows, pressure, movement and genetic factors interact to create distinct ridge patterns on the epidermis. No two individuals, not even identical twins, make the same fingerprints. This uniqueness is a combination of genetic blueprint (the primary driver) and tiny environmental differences during development.

Functionally, these ridges aren’t just for identity. They enhance grip by increasing friction between the skin and objects, helping us grasp and manipulate tools with precision – or, if you’re a koala, eucalyptus leaves. They also improve our sense of touch, amplifying vibrations and textures.

The scientific study of fingerprints is known as dactyloscopy. Its forensic application dates back to the late 19th century when Sir Francis Galton (also the founder of eugenics) and others demonstrated their permanence and individuality. In his 1892 book Finger Prints, Galton calculated that the chance of a “false positive” (two different individuals having the same fingerprints) was about 1 in 64 billion.

The established classification systems organise fingerprint patterns into three main types: loops (the most common, accounting for about 60–65% of prints), whorls (30–35%) and arches (5%). Each of these types contains finer details called minutiae, such as bifurcations, ridge endings and islands. These minutiae make fingerprints highly distinctive.

In forensic science, latent fingerprints – those left on surfaces by natural skin oils and sweat – are often invisible to the naked eye. Investigators use powders, chemical reagents and even laser technology to reveal them. Once visible, they can be scanned and compared against vast fingerprint databases like the FBI’s Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System (IAFIS), which holds millions of records.

Beyond law enforcement, fingerprints have found their way into everyday life. Biometric authentication on smartphones and laptops relies on fingerprint sensors for security and convenience. [Ed: Passkey anyone?] Interestingly, the uniqueness of fingerprints has inspired research in evolutionary biology. Fingerprints are a marvel of natural design – serving both functional and forensic purposes.

Postscript
A very rare medical condition, adermatoglyphia, is characterised by the absence of fingerprints. Affected persons have completely smooth fingertips, palms, toes and soles – but no other medical signs or symptoms. The condition has been called “immigration delay disease” for obvious reasons! [Ed: Calls a spade, a spade.]
