Capoeira is a cultural expression that fuses elements of martial arts, dance, music, acrobatics and spirituality. Enslaved Afro-Brazilians used Capoeira as a form of self-defence disguised as dance.
I publish a book series that purports to celebrate "uncommon knowledge for curious minds" and "everything interesting". Capoeira is a fascinating hybrid with an interesting back story. Also, where I live at Bondi Beach, and as you can see in the post, there is an ex champion and local mestre "Jesus" that we see every day on the promenade doing his moves. He is a real character. That is great! Have you heard of Mestre Borracha from Sydney? He moved to Australia in 1997 and had a great impact on Capoeira. Unfortunately he passed away last year. His group is called "Aruanda". If you're into the local capoeira scene, it might be interesting to reach out to the group and maybe consider him and his work, too. His work definitely deserves to be seen!
