Origin and historical significance of the international date line. It was established in 1884 during the International Meridian Conference held in Washington, D.C.. US President Chester A. Arthur convened the conference, which included representatives of 26 nations. But well before that, in 1522 in fact, the Magellan–Elcano circumnavigation of the world stopped at Cape Verde (island off west Africa) towards end of their trip on Wednesday, 9 July 1522 (ship's time) when the locals told them it was actually Thursday, 10 July 1522. That must've blown their minds.
Muggins was a famous and beloved white Spitz dog and a Canadian Red Cross mascot from Victoria, British Columbia, who helped raise funds for the war effort during World War I by wandering the streets with donation boxes on his back. He was known for his celebrity status, pleasant demeanor, and dedication, raising over $21,000 for veterans' associations and the Red Cross. Muggins later became a subject of national interest when his taxidermied body was rediscovered and put on display
